Trail Bicycling - Finding Grub on the 60-Mile Kansas Prairie Spirit and Southwind Connecting Trails

For several months while riding these trails, I carried my own sandwich lunches after light breakfasts at home. Later, I began sampling a few of the town cafes for brunches or lunches. These restful re-energizing meals enhanced the pleasure of my rides considerably.

Most of these cafes, listed by town, do lunch and dinner, and do not open until 11-am. I've pointed out the ones that open early for a hearty breakfast, some served all day.

Ottawa (population 13,000)

Several cafes along the north-south Main Street one-block east of the trail: Chinese buffet, Italian, American, Mexican, BBQ, bar-grill, pizza, fast-food, dairy, and 24-hour convenience stores.

For breakfast, recommend a 24-hour convenience store near the Old Depot Museum trailhead at the north end of the business district. Also, the Chinese buffet one-block NE of this trailhead across the street (serves American breakfast), along with an 8-am bakery on the NW corner of the town-square.

Princeton (300)

An adjacent convenience store and 4-pm bar-grill four-blocks east of the trail on Hwy-59.

Richmond (500)

An 11-am cafe-grill four-blocks east of trail on Hwy-59 when open (closed).

Garnett (3,500)

Four cafes on the south side of the business square next to the trail. These include American bistro, Mexican, bar-grill, and Chinese buffet. Others located on Hwy-59 (aka Maple Street) four-blocks further west; e.g., country, fast-food, bistro, deli/sub, pizza, dairy, bar-grill, grocer, dollar, and a convenience store.

For breakfast, recommend, a 5-am convenience place two-blocks west of the trail on Park Avenue (flashing light at the trail crossing), and a 7-am American bistro on the south side of the square.

Welda (150)

A flea market two-blocks east of the trail on 1000 Road when open. Drinks and snacks only.

Colony (425)

A combined convenience store and 6:30-am country diner two-blocks east of trail. Home-cooked; breakfast-lunch. Small grocery nearby.

Carlyle (unincorporated)

None.

Iola (6,000)

Several cafes along the north-south State Street next to the trail and the east-west crossroad, Madison Avenue (aka Hwy-54). These include a motel/cafe, country, American, Mexican, Chinese buffet, fast-food, pizza, deli/subs, bakery, burgers/sandwiches, bar-grill, dairy, grocery, super-center, dollar. and convenience.

For breakfast, recommend the 7-am motel/café adjacent to the trail on the east side of State Street (just before crossing it) and the 6-am country café just south of it.

Humboldt (2,000)

Four cafes near the town-square. An 8-am bakery/cafe and 11-am Mexican one located on the north side of the square. Also, a 7-am American grill one-block north of the square on 8th Street (just behind the bakery), and a pizza place four-blocks south of the square on 9th Street. A grocer and dollar place are on north 9th Street, all about a half-mile west from the end of the Southwind Trail.
