Beach Cruiser - Do I Need a Shifter or Not?
Single Speed
A single speed bike is just what it sounds like there is no shifting. Pedal forwards and you go forward. Single speed cruisers typically have a coaster brake. This means when you pedal backward you brake. Single speed cruisers are nice for flatter areas. They are also easy to ride because there is no complication of shifting. There is typically less maintenance as there is not a derailer, brake lines or multiple gears to worry about. Single speeds are great for a cruise around a flat area at a slower speed. For climbing hills or faster speeds shifting is in order. It then becomes time to look at either a 3-speed or 7-speed beach cruiser.
3-Speed
The 3-speed cruiser is a nice middle of the road alternative to the single or 7-speed. The 3-speed offers the flexibility of shifting while not having all of the complications of the 7-speed. The 3-speed allows for less exertion when hill climbing. It also allows for the bike to go faster than the single speed. The 3-speed offers a hand brake which can be easier for people not comfortable with using a coaster brake. It also allows for the bike to stop quicker than a coaster brake. The 3-speed will not go as fast as the 7-speed but will climb hills better than a single speed.
7-Speed
The 7-speed cruiser allows for flexible ride. They have the ability to climb hills and go fast. Because these bikes have multiple gears they allow for different terrains and situations while still maintaining that beach cruiser comfort. The 7-speed is a bit more complicated than a single speed. The derailer and gears must be maintained to keep the bike in good working condition. In addition, the brakes and brake pads should also be maintained and in good working order. If you live in an area with hills or high winds then the higher gears will be just what you want for decreased resistance. for going fast downhill or building speed shift into lower gears to increase the resistance. Having a hand brake may also be easier for some people that do not have the leg strength for the coaster brake.
When buying a beach cruiser look at the area you live in? What do you want the bike to be able to do? How hard do you want to ride? All of the cruisers have the upright sitting position and the comfortable seat. But if you live in a hilly windy area then getting a bike with gears is likely the better choice. If you live in a flatter area or do not want to speed everywhere you go then a single speed may be the better choice. As always the situation and need are what should indicate which beach cruiser to get.
